Description
Phoenician boats were of varied types and equipped with a square sail for navigation. Rowing was reserved for additional maneuvers: entering and leaving ports, tacking and collisions. The transport ships used for commercial activities, due to the roundness of their shell, were called by the Greeks "gauloï" (round), their carrying capacity was very large and their dimensions were approximately twenty to thirty meters long. and six to seven meters wide. The stern was round and ended with a fishtail or spiral ornament. The equally curvilinear prow was decorated with a zoomorphic frieze (horse's head or seahorse). On the front side, there were two eyes which had a double symbolic value: to make the road visible and to intimidate enemies.
The propulsion of these ships was provided by a large mast, which supported a sail attached by a yard, and was oriented according to the direction of the wind. Navigation depended on a rudder composed of large asymmetrical oar blades, placed on the left, near the stern. On the deck there was a shelter for the crew (for around twenty men) and the galley.
Phoenician warships were narrower than those used for trade. The stern was similar to that of commercial ships, while the bow differed significantly. It formed the most important part of the ship and constituted an offensive combat weapon. At the end was the spur or rostrum, which is none other than a bronze point which was used to break the sides of enemy ships. The propulsion of warships was more complicated because it was essential, during battle, to evolve and change course abruptly in order to strike the enemy at the rostrum, while avoiding hits from enemy ships. For this reason, two masts stood on the deck, the central one carried the mainsail and the other, located at the front, carried a small sail to steer the ship even in crosswinds.
