The chechia , chachia, or chachiya, is a well-known headwear throughout the Mediterranean world. This hat, a close cousin of the beret, is the national hat of Tunisia. In June 2018, Tunisian fans honored Tunisia by cheering on their national team in the FIFA World Cup and promoting Tunisian culture, notably through the chechia, a red wool hat, the color of the national flag!

The making of the chechia was considered a refined art, adhering to strict traditional principles. Traditionally, the handcrafted Tunisian chechia was made from combed wool, then knitted by the women who also made the kabbous hats. Generally, the wool was spun in Djerba or Gafsa, then the knitting was entrusted to the expert Kabbasat women of Ariana. The fulling took place in the waters of the Medjerda River at El Batan, the carding was done in El Alia, the origin of the thistles, and finally the dyeing was carried out in Zaghouan. The finishing touches and shaping were completed in Tunis. At this frenetic pace of production, the chechia surely traveled far more than the people who made it…
