The traditional chechia is made of combed wool knitted by women who craft the kabbous caps. The caps are then sent for fulling: they are soaked in hot water and soap and trodden by men to shrink them, to such an extent that the knitted stitches almost disappear. Next comes the thistle treatment, used for carding or brushing the cap to transform the felt into a velvety nap. However, more and more frequently, the thistle is replaced by a metal brush. It is at this stage of production that the chechia is dyed its famous vermilion red color, although they can now be found in a wider variety of colors.
